Our Florida Tour Part 3: Myakka River State Park, Sarasota; Monday, Nov 12 to Thursday, Nov 15

Myakka is a beautiful park – the Palmetto Ridge Campground perfect for RV’s and the other two campgrounds nice for tents or small units. Palmetto Ridge has large, well-spaced graveled parking sites that are very nearly level. The most shaded sites in Palmetto ridge appeared to be 72, 75, 76, 77,  and 78.  There are new, modern bath houses, a birding walk with board walk, boat ramp, several nature walks, fishing, horse trails, ranger programs, and a visitor center.  There is a concession area that boasts airboat and tram tours, canoe, kayak, and bicycle rentals, as well as a gift shop and café. Prices in the gift shop and café seem a bit high.

During our time there we saw deer, rabbits, vultures (be careful – they eat the rubber off your windshield wipers), turtles, gators, roseate spoonbills, little blue herons, snowy egrets, and mottled ducks.

We’ll plan here again even though the mosquitos were ferocious! It would be a good spot to spend a holiday weekend as long as we have made reservations early enough to get in one of the better sites.
