Kolob Canyon – April 29, 2014

Our first foray into Zion was to Kolob Canyon – a six-mile drive through the canyon accessible only from an entrance a few miles away from our park. It was a good preliminary view and we were both stunned with the sights. You see the red road? It's lava rock, ground up and spread over the asphalt as the road is being laid. It's also very commonly used in this area as mulch in planting beds and walkways. And I thought it was only used in gas grills!

As with so many of the “larger-than-life spots we've visited, the photos have nowhere near the impact of the real thing, but they do remind us of a delightful afternoon.
