Zion Canyon National Park – Zion – Mt. Carmel Road May 9, 2014

Red Ledge RV Park, Kanarraville, UT; April 27 to June 9, 2014

Once again, we were stunned with the views. The road travels through a part of the canyon that is not as well-traveled as the main canyon, thus private vehicles are allowed. We spent about five hours gwaking at the views on the 50 mile round-trip. The road was built during the late 1920's and became part of a loop tour of Zion, Bryce Canyon, Cedar Breaks and the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. There is a tunnel more than a mile long near the end of the road, and during its day was the longest non-urban tunnel in the US. The tunnel's dimensions require that vehicles over 11.33 feet or 7.83 feet in width give advance notice so that two-way traffic can be shut down in the tunnel, allowing the oversize vehicle to proceed down the center of the tunnel Vehicles over 13.08 feet, semi-trailers, bicycles, and pedestrians are prohibited in the tunnel.

This was another spectacular drive and is so different from any of the other drives that it's well worth the effort.

Zion-Mt. Carmel Road - many of these trees are 80 to 100 feet tall, just to give some perspective to the size of the mountains.

Still haven't found out what kind of flower this is. I call it the sputnik.
