We headed out by 8 AM and drove through
some more beautiful country. We even stopped for a time at a spot
called Castle Valley. It is in the badlands and has been populated by
prehistoric Indians, trailblazers like Fremont and Kit Carson, as
well as Butch Cassidy. It has always been a difficult country –
drought, grasshoppers, floods, very little water and what there was
of it was often bad. It's hard to imagine anyone farming here. Aren't
we spoiled!
We pulled into Shady Acres late
afternoon. It isn't a place we'd normally stop – poorly kept,
overgrown lawn, and awful restrooms – but we needed a break. We did
see some baby skunks there, which was fun. We'll head out early for
our trip across the Rocky Mountains!
