We headed out from Alpine early and saw
landscapes from rocky cliffs to swampy meadows, a big helicopter on
the side of the road, One spot on the interstate recommended 25 MPH
and lots of flashing signs warning about the fires and road closures (you'll notice the blueish cast to most of the photos).
Just before we got to the Idaho-Montana border, we saw a very large
area – about 1,000 feet long and 100 feet wide maybe – that we
can't identify. I've added a couple photos – maybe you know what it
is? If so, please leave a note - we'd love to find out.
As we drove into Lolo, I was again
surprised by all the little casinos around, many of which had fuel
which was usually 20 or 30 cents less than regular gas stations. Needless-to-say, we
availed ourselves of their diesel whenever we could.
We arrived at our overnight stop and it
was a far cry from Alpine – reminded me a little bit of Dune Lake
in Michigan. The roads through the campground were dirt and full of
ruts, the campsites were dirt with tree stumps to dodge, and the
hookups were only so-so. Not a pleasant place and we certainly wouldn't want to stay a week or two, but it was OK for what we needed.
